PREBIOTICS

PREBIOTICS

We already know that there are trillions of microorganisms inside or digestive tract. Together they are known as Gut microbiota. What we eat, i.e., the type of food we eat can change the composition of these microorganisms. It can either increase the number of beneficial microorganisms inside our digestive tract or reduce their number, allowing the growth of bad/harmful microorganisms. Prebiotics are complex carbohydrates. They resist digestion and or absorption within our digestive tract. They act as a source of food for the good/beneficial microorganisms (Good bacteria). These beneficial microbes break down prebiotics to use them as a source of food and energy for their growth. It increases the number of beneficial bacteria inside our digestive tract, which has multiple benefits on our overall health.

NORMAL GUT FLORA (GUT BACTERIA): A NECESSITY FOR GOOD HEALTH

In previous articles, we have seen that about 100 trillion bacteria, both good and bad, live inside your digestive system, and collectively they're known as the gut microbiota. The number of bacteria present inside our digestive tract is approx. Ten times more than the total number of cells in our body. Every individual's gut microbiota is unique. An individual's food and lifestyle habits decide the type of bacteria Good (friendly) or Bad (Harmful) he/she will have in large number within the digestive tract. Subsequently, it also decides his or her health. If the number of Good (friendly) bacteria is more than that of a harmful (bad) one, it aids in maintaining good health. But if the opposite happens then, one has to suffer from many health-related problems.
